Abbaye de Beaulieu : installation monumentale de Juliette Minchin

Discover the monumental installation in the church of the abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue: The Cross, Vigil at the Thorns by Juliette Minchin.

As part of the artistic program of the Ministry of Culture New Worlds, the Center des Monuments Nationaux presents a monumental installation by the artist Juliette Minchin entitled La Croix (vigil with thorns), created in situ for the abbey of Beaulieu-en- Rouergue.

Arranged at the crossroads of the transept between the nave and the choir, the sculpture in the shape of a cross, 28 meters long, responds to the plan of the abbey church. It is composed of 33 perforated steel panels covered with wax, where wicks are lit in turn. Like a huge candle, the installation evolves over the course of the exhibition and gradually reveals its metal structure, lace whose motif of roses echoes the rosettes and the rose garden of the Cistercian abbey.

In the heart of the old sanctuary, the work of Juliette Minchin invites the visitor to introspection. It is a question here of metamorphosis and continuity, like the wax that the artist reuses from one installation to another. Transformed by the melting of its raw material, the work is imbued with the memory of the places and invites us to take a new look at them.
