A castle with a tormented history

Au Middle Ages, a castral village developed on the narrow forecourt located at the foot of the rock, overlooking a deep ravine. During the Hundred Years War, the site passed many times into the hands of the English, whose possessions extended over a large part of Quercy. So the castle of Larroque-Toirac was constantly perfected in the XNUMXth, XNUMXth, XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries.

Follow the guide who will tell you the story of this timeless place!

The cliff against which the castle of Larroque-Toirac was built shelters caves which served as troglodyte habitat for Neolithic men. In Gallo-Roman times, it was the domain of a certain Turturius, hence the toponym Toirac which still remains today.

Majestic architecture

Since its creation, the castle of Larroque-Toirac has always been inhabited by its owners, which explains its very good state of conservation. From the 13th century, a curtain protected the site to the east, on the main access side via the Causse. To the west, the site included a well, a chapel and other fortifications.

The stately home, where the original kitchen, has beautiful fireplaces XNUMXth century as well as polychrome frescoes from the XNUMXth century. Admire these works of art that have survived the centuries and listen to their story.

During the reign of Louis XIV, certain parts of the castle were dismantled in order to create a French garden, on the model of Versailles. Well exposed at the back of the castle on terraces, a park now contains a collection of exotic plants.
