A castle with a tormented history
Au Middle Ages, a castral village developed on the narrow forecourt located at the foot of the rock, overlooking a deep ravine. During the Hundred Years War, the site passed many times into the hands of the English, whose possessions extended over a large part of Quercy. The cliff against which the castle of Larroque-Toirac was built shelters caves which served as troglodyte habitat for Neolithic men. In Gallo-Roman times, it was the domain of a certain Turturius, hence the toponym Toirac which still remains today.
Majestic architecture
Since its creation, the castle of Larroque-Toirac has always been inhabited by its owners, which explains its very good state of conservation. From the 13th century, a curtain protected the site to the east, on the main access side via the Causse. To the west, the site included a well, a chapel and other fortifications.
