Villeneuve

Eglise Saint-Sépulcre

The Villeneuve church has a dual architecture: a Romanesque part from the 11th and 12th centuries and a Gothic part from the 13th and 14th centuries. A stopover on the way to Santiago Compostela, it presents superb polychrome frescoes.

The Villeneuve church was built in two stages: the Romanesque church, an original copy of the sanctuary of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, dates from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the Gothic church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul, dates from the 13th and 14th centuries.

The north apse is rich in polychrome murals illustrating the legend of the Hanged Man, a major theme on the route to Santiago de Compostela.

The building is also equipped with rich furnishings, including 16th century stalls, a 17th century baroque altar and a contemporary organ, regularly in operation.

Corresponding to the cloister of the Benedictine priory, the adjoining presbytery garden is also accessible. The same is true of the old chapter house, on a guided tour.
