Musée Champollion : Les Ecritures du Monde
About Us
The birthplace of the famous decipherer of hieroglyphs is devoted to the history of the writings of the world and to Egyptology. From Mexico to China, via the Mediterranean, the museum's collection recounts the great adventure of writing.
The Champollion museum, housed in the former birthplace of Jean-François Champollion, a famous decipherer of hieroglyphs, is also dedicated to the history of the writings of the world. The collections from all over the world present the richness and diversity of the cultures of yesterday and today which, more than 5000 years ago, invented and practiced writing using the first tools and signs. The approximately six hundred objects presented relate the journey of writing along the routes of merchants or conquerors, and the evolution of its layout, according to the hand, from the scribes to the present day.
The visit continues in the Place des Scriptures, a reproduction of the Rosetta Stone, overlooked by terraced gardens planted with Egyptian papyrus.
