Thanks to its cliffside location, Montsalès was a natural choice for a fort. A castle was reportedly built there around 1260 by Géraud de Cardailhac, before becoming the center of the powerful Balaguier family's lordships. Later, in 1601, the site passed, through marriage, into the hands of the Crussol d'Uzès family.
Of the castle, only the square dungeon, undoubtedly lowered over time. Considered one of the oldest in Rouergue, it still impresses with the record thickness of its walls, reaching 2,35 meters.
