Visit the natural site of Roc du Gorb

The Roc du Gorb is located in the Viaur Valley, between Villefranche-de-Rouergue (28 km to the North) and Albi (48 km to the South). The natural site is also very close to Najac (15 km away) and 41 km away Saint Antonin Noble Val.

  • From Najac, head towards Saint André de Najac. At the intersection with the D922, turn left, then turn right onto the D544, towards Bor and Bar, then towards Bar. Go to Camping Le Gourpassou, then turn right to the parking lot.

A remarkable and fragile natural site

La Lower Viaur Valley is a remarkable and fragile natural site, classified Sensitive Natural Area (ENS) and integrated into the network Natura 2000 Here, one discovers habitats linked to waterways, as well as heathland and woodlands on the slopes of steep inclines. Access to sectors

Closest to the parking lot (5 to 10 minute walk):
Most of the sectors are located along the riverbank. In order, you will find: the Rock of Gorb (the highest point, slightly set back), then after the Le Riou stream: The Beach, Children's Islandthen backing away The Yellow Wall et The Tourbefore finally The Bows at the water's edge.

A 5-minute walk further:
Le Oven, The West Face et The Guardian, located on the hillside. To reach them, take the small path that climbs between the Le Riou stream and the Roc du Gorb.

8 essential things to know before heading out to climb:

Rock climbing: Frequently Asked Questions

Rock climbing takes place on private land. However, agreements have been signed between the landowners and the municipality of Bor et Bar to allow you to continue climbing on this site.

This site has been classified as a sports climbing site since May 2025 and meets the standards established by the French Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FFME). You can climb there in complete safety.

Yes, they are freely accessible with your own equipment.

Two areas have been specifically designated as "discovery" areas: the Beach and the Children's Island, but only the following people will be allowed to supervise them:

A qualified professional

  • DE or BE climbing instructor (or recognized equivalent) in all sectors
  • BPJEPS climbing (natural environment) on the 2 discovery sectors

A qualified FFME federal instructor for Natural Climbing Sites (SNE)

  • SNE Initiator
  • Federal climbing instructor

A volunteer from a FFME club, only if:

  • Acts within the framework of a club activity

At Roc du Gorb, you climb metamorphic schist veined with quartz.

Be careful, this is a very sharp rock! The route setters have always chosen the best spots for the bolts and anchors. However, avoid swinging during your rappels or top-ropes, as you could easily cut your rope.

A 60-meter rope is sufficient.

10 quickdraws are enough to climb the entire site. Only 4 routes require a few more quickdraws.

The routes have been cleared and every year a check is carried out by the FFME Aveyron-Lozère territorial committee.

Nevertheless, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended, both for the belayer and for the climber.

The climbing area is never closed due to peregrine falcon nesting; only one route, named "Gorb," in the "Roc du Gorb" sector is affected. A sign will be posted at the base of the route. Generally, the closure is in effect from February to June. Rappelling is prohibited in this sector during the nesting season.

The via ferrata

Halfway between hiking and climbing, the Roc du Gorb via ferrata This course offers a unique and fun way to discover the Viaur Valley. Access to the via ferrata

To get to the start of the via ferrata, allow 5 minutes walk along the Viaur river. Leave the main path and at the first 45-meter-high rock, "Le Gorb", take the path that climbs to the right.
