The Saint-Blaise bridge, a must-see in Najac
The Saint-Blaise bridge, built in the middle of the 13th century in Najac, is a remarkable medieval work of art in sandstone. This donkey-backed bridge, located on the original road leading to Villefranche-de-Rouergue, played a crucial role for merchants and pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, allowing them to cross the Aveyron in all seasons. Originally, it had four arches and forepeaks, remains of which are still visible today.
This place, strategic for trade and travel, also housed a leper colony with a chapel. The local lords, followed by the consuls in the service of the King of France, exploited its importance by establishing a lucrative toll. They collected taxes, called tonlieu, on goods and travelers.
This bridge thus bears witness not only to a medieval architectural feat, but also to the economic and social organisation of the time.
