Conference by Sylvie Brunel
The issue of world hunger remains a pressing one. Food needs are growing, and many people today suffer from malnutrition, including in Europe. French agriculture, which had risen to the challenge, is now facing crucial challenges: ensuring the next generation, maintaining its competitiveness, and reconciling expectations and models that are as diverse as they are contradictory. Yet criticism is relentless, making farmers the scapegoat for our fears. What kind of society dares to bite the hand that feeds it, often without understanding the reality of working the land? How can we act while preserving the environment?
Sylvie Brunel is a geographer, economist, writer, and professor emeritus at Sorbonne University. A member of the Academy of Agriculture, she worked for seventeen years in NGOs, including Action Against Hunger, of which she was President, and Doctors Without Borders. A specialist in development issues, she is particularly interested in food security issues. She has published numerous scientific works, essays, and novels, including Why Peasants Will Save the World, 2020, and Nourrir. Stop Mistreating Those Who Support Us!, 2023.
