USP – Conférence "NO WOMAN’S LAND : comment vivent les femmes afghanes sous le régime Taliban ?"
Wednesday March 11 at 18:30 p.m.
Théâtre municipale Quai de la Sénéchaussée 12200 Villefranche-de-Rouergue
Mélissa CORNET and Hamida AMAN, from Radio Begum, come to bear witness to the social disappearance of women orchestrated by the Taliban.
Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, Afghan women have seen their rights and freedoms wiped out. Numerous decrees and laws have been adopted, gradually removing any means of expressing their identity, to the point of making women disappear from the Afghan streets. How do Afghan women live, or how do they manage to live? How can they resist the relentless violence imposed by the ultra-conservative regime? What role has Radio Begum played in this struggle? Mélissa CORNET and Hamida AMAN, from Radio Begum, bear witness to the social disappearance of women orchestrated by the Taliban. Multiple voices speaking of the same suffering: that of existing, in the face of an attempt to annihilate women's identity.
Mélissa CORNET is a lawyer specializing in human rights issues. Since 2018, she has been conducting research in Afghanistan, primarily on women's rights. In 2024, she and Iranian-Canadian photographer Kiana Hayeri won the Carmignac Foundation Photojournalism Prize. This work, "No Woman's Land," was exhibited in Paris at the Réfectoire des Cordeliers and then at the Port de Solférino.
Hamida AMAM is an Afghan journalist. She is the founder of the Begum Organization for Women (BOW), whose mission is threefold: it is an NGO, a media outlet (radio and television), and an online course portal based between Paris and Kabul. Radio Begum broadcast courses that enabled girls to maintain a connection to education and health before being banned from the airwaves by the Taliban.
