USP – Conférence : "Fake news : Quel est vraiment le problème ?"
Tuesday, November 03 at 18:30 p.m.
Cinéma Vox 16 Boulevard Charles de Gaulle 12200 Villefranche-de-Rouergue
Conference by Sebastian Dieguez
The year 2016 was declared the year of "post-truth." What do we mean by this term? In an era where beliefs matter less than facts, the infamous "fake news" has become, in just a few months , the new leitmotif of global debate. Therefore, we must understand how opinion claims to prevail over truth and grasp the success of scientific fraud and "conspiracy theories." What exactly is disinformation? How can we unmask conspiracy theories in the flood of daily news? How should we process the mass of information with which we are bombarded and which we sometimes even seek out?
Sebastian DIÉGUEZ holds a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience, is a lecturer-researcher at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), author and columnist.
A specialist in cognitive mechanisms related to beliefs, conspiracy theories and disinformation, he is known to the general public for his essays , his critical popularization works and his satirical columns in the weekly magazine Vigousse.
He is the author of * Total Bullshit: At the Heart of Post-Truth* (PUF, 2018). He recently published *Conspiracy Theories *, *Believe*, and *Why Beliefs Are Not What We Think* (Éliott, 2022).
