We are familiar with the role of spiritual leader of the Bishop of Rome, at the head of a Church with nearly 1.5 billion faithful. But the Pope is also a head of state, the head of "Vatican City State." As such, the Pope wields considerable influence and acts upon the sphere of international relations. What is the true impact of this Vatican diplomacy, unique in the world, and how does it operate on the international stage? From defending Christian minorities in the Middle East to advocating for migrants, the relationship with American presidents, the delicate relationship with the Chinese Communist Party… or the Ukrainian question… Constance Colonna-Cesari will examine some of these pressing issues. This diplomacy, which has eternity before it, is not immune to certain pitfalls.

Constance Colonna Cesari , author, journalist, and filmmaker, has specialized for thirty years in issues relating to Christianity and those who lead it. She contributes to numerous newspapers, including Sud-Ouest, Marianne, L'Obs, Le Temps (Geneva), and the journal Politique Internationale . Among her recent books and films, Dans les secrets de la Diplomatie vaticane (In the Secrets of Vatican Diplomacy ), published by Editions du Seuil, received the L'Express Documentary Prize. She directed the documentary Les Diplomates du Pape (The Pope's Diplomats ), broadcast on Arte in 2018, and most recently, Les Dernières batailles du Pape François (The Last Battles of Pope Francis) , broadcast on LCP.
