Théâtre classique : "L’Avare"
Sketch Theatre Company
Presenting a Molière play seems a bit pointless, given how beloved this author is in France! As for Harpagon, he's become a generic term for any miserly person! And yet this Miser, directed by Jérôme Jalabert, artistic director of the Compagnie de L'Esquisse, located in St-Orens, is surprising.
Harpagon, never likeable, is particularly dark here; in his madness he makes us think of a dangerous beast. He listens to no one, he is almost dehumanized, and the artistry of the actor who portrays him must be emphasized.
Nine actors on stage, in a contemporary and highly symbolic production (Harpagon is often perched atop a mound of piled objects), will keep us laughing for two hours, even though the subject matter doesn't exactly lend itself to it. This is thanks to Molière's artistry, but also to the L'Esquisse company, specialists in Molière's comedies, among others.
Thus, in the Sud-Ouest newspaper one could read: "We laugh from beginning to end with this play by Molière, although everything is dramatic on stage."
