Between the Berlin of Brecht and Weill and the Paris of Piaf and Cocteau. A creation by François Testory, actor and director, which blends song, theatre and an intimate atmosphere under the covered market hall of Villefranche (1888).
The concert repertoire staged Paris–Berlin structured around a deliberate central theme: a selection of emblematic issues from Cabaret by Kander and Ebb. These pieces engage in dialogue with other German and French songs — more specifically Parisian and Berliner — from the great cabaret tradition that made the reputation of these two capitals as brilliant as it was scandalous.
This musical journey reminds us — or, dare we say, reveals to the younger generation — that long before the word queer It doesn't enter common parlance, but an alternative, marginal, and resolutely subversive world thrived in the cultural interstices of patriarchal industrial societies, constrained by rigid laws and norms. A world tolerated, willingly or unwillingly, in the name of progress and profit, so that one could, for a few moments, savor its pleasures, its excesses, and its dangerous freedoms.
Performed by three musicians and five singers, the show unfolds over approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, punctuated by a 30-minute intermission. This extends the experience around a bar fully integrated into the stage design — because in cabaret, you never really leave the stage.
The decor, drawing on Bauhaus, Constructivist and Art Deco influences, immerses the audience in the heart of the action: seated at tables reminiscent of a traditional cabaret, the spectator becomes a witness — and accomplice — to this nocturnal, unsettling and deliciously transgressive atmosphere.
Sung in French, German, and English, the show is not limited to works from that era. The repertoire extends to contemporary pop-rock songs that evoke or reclaim the legacy of this golden age of cabaret, highlighting how these struggles, desires, and bursts of freedom still resonate today.
The classic covered market hall thus offers an unexpected yet electrifying setting for this semi-staged version: a raw space for an art form that has never quite been raw. A journey between smoke, glitz, and lucidity—where song flirts with history, and where the curtain, decidedly, never fully falls.
