Opéra Bastide – Les Noces de Figaro
Friday July 17 at 20:30 p.m.
Théâtre des Bastides Quai de la Sénéchaussée 12200 Villefranche-de-Rouergue
For this new production, the Opéra Bastide team brings together international singers in the Italian-style setting of the Théâtre des Bastides (1896), with a professional orchestra and modern staging by Korogodsky.
Napoleon said of Beaumarchais' play, The Marriage of FigaroHe claimed it was the first cannon shot fired in the French Revolution. He was referring to the revolutionary dimension of the work, where a class conflict sees virtuous servants gain the upper hand over a corrupt aristocracy. The play, and later the opera, was banned in much of Europe due to the social subversion of its plot. Over time, many viewers have come to appreciate this masterpiece by seeing in it another kind of confrontation: the battle of the sexes.
This production reveals something else entirely: within human relationships—and particularly between the sexes—a form of savagery, chaos, or untamed natural force, capable of thwarting the best intentions and overturning the most ordered societies. Chaos unravels order, nature seduces reason, and passion trumps morality. These timeless tensions make the work as provocative today as it was when it was created at the end of the 18th century.
