The challenge of illiteracy: everyone is concerned as the Agency writes National Fight Against Illiteracy.
The term "illiteracy" appeared in 1978 under the pen of the founder of ATD Fourth World, Father Joseph Wresinski, to talk about the situation of people who have difficulty with writing, reading and arithmetic even though they were educated in France.
This term therefore concerns all those who, after having been educated in French, do not have the basic skills necessary in reading, writing, calculation, digital, to be independent in simple situations of daily life.
Illiteracy has multiple origins that can take root from a very young age. Difficult school pasts, family breakups, health problems, or even the erosion of basic skills when they are not used enough are all possible causes. Although often invisible, illiteracy represents a major societal challenge which requires everyone's commitment.
