In North America, Meso and South America, indigenous healing techniques have been used for thousands of years to heal a variety of physical, mental and emotional ailments.

Among the many differences, there are some interesting similarities across their long history and the vastness of the continents. In this presentation, anthropologist Robert Vetter and Maddi Cheers explore some of the healing methods found in the Americas, including:

- Medicinal plants

- Rituals and ceremonies

- Purification by heat (sweat lodge or Temazcal)

- The healing power of prayer

- Music as a means of healing

- Cultivate personal power in nature

- Indigenous talk therapy

- Spiritual cleansings

In these indigenous healing systems, medicine and spirituality are not separate practices, but one and the same. Although little known, these techniques are still used today and bring healing and deep meaning to those who practice them. Join us for a sample of the "good medicine" that has sustained the indigenous peoples of the Americas for millennia.

ROBERT VETTER is a cultural anthropologist who has conducted fieldwork in the field of spirituality and healing since 1980. He earned a master's degree in anthropology from the University of Oklahoma. He was adopted by families from the Cheyenne, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. His adoptive grandfather was Oliver Pahdopony, the last Comanche medicine man. Along with his adoptive uncle and medicine man Richard Tartsah Senior, Robert Vetter wrote the book Big Bow: The Spiritual Life and Teachings of a Kiowa Family. Robert is also a teacher and practitioner of Mesoamerican Curanderismo.

MADDI CHEERS is an interfaith minister, spiritual guide, storyteller, poet, author and healing artist. For over 25 years, she has studied the culture and spiritual traditions of many world religions, past and present. The majority of her work is based on the indigenous practices of the peoples of North, Central and South America. She incorporated into these teachings her own intuitive sense of rituals and ceremonies.
