For Enzo Roulleau-Bret, painting is a sport. Here, he offers an immersion into the geography of motocross: its tracks, its riders, its workshops, its infrastructure, and its uses. But this geography is also that of a world that is gradually disappearing. Motocross tracks are slowly vanishing from the outskirts of medium-sized towns and small French cities. The sport is becoming more expensive, more regulated, and harder to justify in a context of growing environmental concerns. The tracks are falling silent. Vegetation is reclaiming the artificial landscapes.
Enzo Roulleau-Bret doesn't just paint motocross; he archives its memory. His paintings document a popular world at the very moment it begins to fade into memory. Like the painters of rural or working-class life before him, he records the signs of a world threatened with oblivion and transforms its vestiges into lasting images.
