Conférences Écrire le voyage en Égypte
Thursday, September 24 at 18 a.m.
Musée Champollion – Les Ecritures du Monde Place Champollion 46100 Figeac
Hélène Virenque, curator of classical literature collections (BnF) and Egyptologist, will present a lecture on the theme of women who travelled to Egypt.
This conference will discuss the women who travelled to Egypt on pilgrimage or for medical treatment and how they eventually became tourists, or informed enthusiasts, or even Egyptologists.
Their travel journals evoke their impressions, tinged with an Orientalism that contrasts slightly with the male perspective: they are sometimes fascinated by ancient ruins, sometimes critical of the situation of women and harems in particular. Several European figures will be discussed, such as the Frenchwoman Susanne Voilquin, the Swiss Valérie de Gasparin, and the Englishwoman Amelia B. Edwards, each of whom had different experiences during the 19th century.
Lecture given by Hélène Virenque, Curator of Classical Literature Collections (BnF) and Egyptologist
In partnership with the Friends of the Champollion Museum association
