Conférence Écrire le voyage en Égypte
This conference will discuss women who traveled to Egypt as part of a pilgrimage or for treatment and how they ultimately became tourists, or enlightened amateurs, or even Egyptologists.
Their travel journals evoke their impressions tinged with an orientalism slightly out of step with the male gaze: they are sometimes fascinated by ancient remains, sometimes critical of the situation of women and harems in particular. Several European figures will be discussed, such as the Frenchwoman Susanne Voilquin, the Swiss Valérie de Gasparin and the Englishwoman Amelia B. Edwards, each of whom had different experiences during the 19th century.
In partnership with the Friends of the Champollion Museum association.
Conference proposed as part of the Féminin Pluriel.le program
