Conférence-débat avec Yves Garric

Friday February 13 at 18:30 p.m.

Salle du Sénéchal 31 rue du Sénéchal 12200 Villefranche-de-Rouergue

Radio, television, and print journalist; writer; director.

The subject :

"An objective journalist... doesn't exist!"... And for good reason: every human being is deeply marked by their subjectivity, from which they cannot easily escape. So, rather than demanding that journalists be "objective," let's expect them to be "honest." This ideal of honesty is not so easy to achieve, however: it rests on a host of fundamental requirements, starting with training, source verification, and respect for dialectical debate, which form the basis of journalistic ethics. The active involvement of the reader or listener is also essential. This is what Yves Garric emphasizes, drawing on his forty years of experience in print media, radio, and television.

The speaker:

Yves Garric was a journalist for forty years. From his studies in classical literature, he retained a rigorous approach to writing, which he would jealously apply even in his radio and television commentaries. He began his career at the daily newspaper Centre-Presse, where he became familiar with the workings of institutions at the grassroots level. He followed several local development projects with passion, leading him to say that "the greatest asset of a region is its people." Recruited by Radio France, he experienced broadcasting and live television. To avoid moving to Paris and to continue practicing the motto dear to his generation, "live and work in the region," he joined the newsroom of France 3 Sud. There, he specialized for about fifteen years in the field of space; Ariane V, satellites, and major missions into space held no secrets for him. As a

As a journalist, he proved a pioneer in many areas of writing: he was among the very first to raise the alarm about the excesses of industrial agriculture, GMOs, and climate change. His plays, including those for young audiences, are performed throughout the French-speaking world. Nearly forty years after its creation, his famous comedy "Une ferme en Trop" (One Farm Too Many), in particular, remains as fresh as ever and continues to be performed.

Yves Garric also held union responsibilities, with ethics as his main focus.
