Concert des Voix d'Hommes à l'Abbaye de Loc-Dieu

Sunday May 04 at 17:30 a.m.
Abbaye de Loc-Dieu 12200 Martiel
Concert of the Male Voices of the Toulouse Choir, winner of the Bettencourt Prize for Choral Singing. The Toulouse Choir is directed by its Anglo-French founder, Mark Opstad.

The male voices of the Toulouse Choir School are made up of high school and university students from the Toulouse Choir School, currently training at the Toulouse Conservatory, as well as a few professional voices. Today, under the direction of Mark Opstad (founder and director of the Toulouse Choir School), they offer a program of music for male voices ranging from the Renaissance to the present day: Music by Palestrina, Byrd, Elgar, Poulenc, and others.

The Toulouse Mastery was created in 2006 within the Toulouse Conservatory, becoming the first choir structure (classes with flexible timetables) in the southwest of France. The Maîtrise is a specialized musical training giving life to an artistic vocal ensemble of excellence. The ensemble is the winner of the 2017 Liliane Bettencourt Prize for choral singing awarded by the Academy of Fine Arts.

The different components of the Maîtrise sometimes perform separately for the high voice/male voice repertoire, as for this concert of the Maîtrise's Male Voices.

The Maîtrise gives around ten concerts a year, mainly in Toulouse but also throughout France (Chapelle Royale de Versailles, Opéra-Comique), in numerous festivals, as well as abroad. The Maîtrise de Toulouse regularly collaborates with other ensembles and institutions (the Orchestre du Capitole, the Sacqueboutiers, the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, etc.)

The choir's numerous recordings have received critical acclaim in the international music press, including 5 Diapasons in France (twice), Resmusica's La Clef du mois, 'essential releases' in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper, 4 stars in BBC Music Magazine, a 'coup de cœur' in the Sacrées musiques program on France Musique, and the American Record Guide's Critics' Choice for 2012, the latter declaring that "...there is probably nothing this choir couldn't sing, and do it superbly well....". Their CD with the Ensemble Binchois received a Diapason Découverte and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (early music category).
