"Cronaca di un Amore" was released in 1950, and it marks (for some) the break with "neorealismo", the conception of the screenplay as an American film noir (of the time) aroused much criticism upon its release.
A crime (real or imagined) is the underlying theme of this tormented love story, which unfolds between Milan and Ferrara (also Antonioni's hometown), and whose protagonists are prisoners of their past…
Antonioni also wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay, and the film was very poorly received by the public upon its release; curiously, it was first shown in France, before being shown in Italian cinemas (late 1950).
Lucia Bosé (Miss Italy in 1947) and Massimo Girotti (a very prominent actor at the time) play the two main roles in the story.
