Animals at the heart of the medieval world. Temporary exhibition
Opening reception Friday, April 17th at 18:30 pm.
Whether real or imaginary, animals occupied an essential place in medieval society.
Ever-present alongside man, they help him understand the messages of texts, accompany him in his daily work or participate in his survival.
They serve to illustrate the allegories of sacred texts, to transmit moral teachings, or to mock the powerful and those who decide.
Indispensable to daily life, they are at once material, tools and companions on the road.
From bestiaries to encyclopedias, from sculpted capitals to stained-glass windows, animals are constantly represented by man.
How do we view these animals today? Why do some inspire fear, while others inspire fascination or tenderness?
Between realism and stereotypes, idealized representations and preconceived ideas, this exhibition invites you to discover the species that have populated our stories, our cities and our imagination since the beginning of time.
The animals "land" in the six communes of the Pays d'art et d'histoire des Bastides du Rouergue.
