Objective and content

This summer academy aims to be the convergence of traditional music from today and earlier periods, from here and elsewhere.

Traditional Occitan songs and medieval music, far from being opposed, are part of the same traditional musical world, united by the close links of language, culture, and vocal practice within a territory…

The various branches of these musical traditions draw their sources from the same roots, and it is by fostering dialogue between them that the evidence of a shared logic can be highlighted. A place for exchange and learning, this summer academy is a time for sharing and working towards common ground.

Traditional Occitan song

Mickaël Courdesses will showcase the traditional Occitan repertoire which, through its musical or poetic forms, is linked to the medieval period: chansons de geste, laments, Gregorian airs turned into mockery or put into polyphony according to traditional codes, etc.

From the monophonic repertoire, we will also explore modal polyphony (drones, parallel fifths, etc.) according to medieval practices of which we have traces.

Particular attention will be paid to the work on vocal timbre and prosody (rhythm and melody of the texts).

Gregorian/Medieval Chant

Maxime Docteur and Clément Frouin will offer a workshop on repertoire and vocality in the medieval period: Gregorian chant, 13th century motets, polyphonies of the Notre-Dame School and ballads of the Ars Nova will immerse you in this very musical Middle Ages.

The musical ensemble Les Rossinholets promotes medieval music through concerts, workshops, exhibitions, and lectures. Its two founding members have advanced university training in medieval musicology and work closely with musical sources recorded between the 10th and 15th centuries.

This workshop is open to the public.

Participation is limited to 20 people per workshop.
