Netflix series in Villefranche de Rouergue: an astonishing filming location for the adaptation of the book “All the Light We Cannot See”

All the Light We Cannot See

All the light we can't see

All the light we can't see is the title of the novel written by Anthony Doer, published in 2014 under the original title “All the Light We Cannot See”. This book was a huge success, winning the Pulitzer Prize fiction in 2015.

The series is an adaptation of the novel in which we follow the story of Marie-Laure, a young visually impaired girl living in France during the Second World War, and Werner, a young German boy. Their lives intersect in unexpected ways in a context of war and survival.

Why was the series filmed in Villefranche de Rouergue?

If you have read the book or seen the series, you may have noticed that the French scenes take place mainly in Paris and Saint-Malo. But then, why was the series largely filmed in Villefranche de Rouergue?

The city, located to the west of the department of the Aveyron, was chosen for its preserved historic center. With its medieval buildings, its picturesque streets, and its typical squares, it offers a setting in keeping with the time in which the plot takes place, unlike Saint-Malo which was partly rebuilt after the Second World War. Beyond its heritage, Villefranche de Rouergue was also chosen for its relative tranquility and the cooperativeness of local authorities. Unlike larger and busier cities, Villefranche offers a favorable setting for filming thanks to a certain availability and flexibility of locations.
